New Mini Series for Sunday Nights
There will be a new mini series starting on Sunday night, June 29th. Pastor Ed Wilde will be teaching three lessons on John Owen’s works, “Indwelling Sin”, “Temptation: The Nature and Power of It” and the “Mortification of Sin”. He will be using the book “Overcoming Sin & Temptation” edited by Kapic & Taylor, which is a useful edition of these three works by John Owen. [Available in our bookstore.] John Owen, “The Prince of Puritan Divines”. Jerry Bridges wrote of Owen, “To read Owen is to mine spiritual gold”. C.J. Mahaney wrote, “No writer has taught me more about the dynamics of the heart and the deceitfulness of sin than John Owen.” While Owen is extraordinarily good on the nature of sin and how to overcome sin, he can be difficult to follow. We are going to go over these three works, one on each night, to explain Owen’s works. Outside of the Bible, there are no better books on the nature of sin and dealing with temptation. Incidentally, these works were originally sermons John Owen taught to high school boys to help them deal with sin. Interesting how youth ministries have changed over the past 400 years. Newcomer Class
The next Newcomer Class for membership will be on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 9:00am in WC-1. If you plan on attending, please write "Newcomer Class" on your attendance card and turn it in with the offering or to an usher or call the church office at 818.556.4840, x200.
Women's Summer Bible Study
Join us this summer (June 10 through August 14), on Tuesday mornings (9:30am-11:30am) or Thursday nights (7:00pm-9:00pm), as Tina Carns and Shelbi Cullen teach through the book, Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate by Jerry Bridges. Childcare will be available. Cost is $20 for the book and other study materials. Contact Laurena Townsend if you have questions.
Summer Camp
Summer camp dates are here! From August 10-16 the High School group will return to Lake Almanor with teaching from Erik Swanson, our college/young adult intern, and food from Vahak Nersissian. From August 11-15 the Junior High group will return to Pinecrest near Lake Arrowhead with teaching from Jeff Jones. Please keep these weeks open in your family's summer schedule.
Vacation Bible School
The elders of Calvary Bible Church have, in light of the construction that is taking place, decided to CANCEL this year's V.B.S. We feel that it is in the best interest of everyone involved to do this and look forward to holding V.B.S. 2009 in the new Children's Building. Thank you for your understanding as we deal with both the excitement and difficulties associated with this building project.
Baptism Class
The next baptism classes will be on Sunday, August 24 and 31, 2008 at 9:30am in the library (upstairs - WC4). Both classes must be attended.
Men's In-House Retreat
Please mark your calendar for the Men's In-House Retreat this year on September 12 and 13.
Membership Interviews
Elders will be available after the Second Service upstairs in the library (WC-4) on the first Sunday of each month for those who have completed the Newcomer Class and have their completed membership application with them or have turned it in.
Senior Adult Ministry Luncheons
During 2008, on the second Monday of each month from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, the seniors of Calvary will gather to minister to the building project workers. Lunch will begin at noon in Room WC-2. There will be a time of fellowship, and for our seniors to greet and minister to the building workers. At 1:00pm we will move into the Worship Center for a time of worship and teaching. Lunch tickets for $5 will be available each month at the Hospitality Table near the Worship Center center-door entrance on Sundays, beginning two weeks prior to the luncheon.
