Absolute Truth

October, 2002

by: Brock Bolde

Recently, I had the privilege of sharing from God's Word with some of the Fathers of our church at our Father/Daughter Banquet. During this time, I made them aware of some of the sobering statistics that came out of the 2000 census. The most alarming being that for the first time ever, nuclear families (husband and wife with children) dropped below 25 percent of households. In our society, the old taboos of cohabitation and divorce have all but disappeared. In partnership with that is the dramatic increase in same–sex unions.

While there are a number of reasons as to why these things are happening, I believe that the driving force behind them all is the abandonment of absolute truth. Many in our society do not hold to the fact that there are any absolute truths. As a result, the family has fallen on hard times. Instead of being governed by the absolute truths of Scripture, each family is determining their own truth — and the results are chaos, confusion, and emptiness.

Now is the time for the Christian family to be light and salt in this lost world! People are lost and they're looking for something that's real; something that's true. You and I have the incredible opportunity to show them the Word of God! 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

It is in the Scriptures that we learn truth; and these truths are absolute! Were it not for the Scriptures, how would we know right from wrong; good from evil; truth from falsehood? Where else could we go to discover the unfathomable love of Christ; the incalculable work of Christ; and the immeasurable glory of Christ? The Word of God exposes us to all of this and much more! Were it not for the Word of God, the people of God would have no absolute standards in which to govern their lives. It would be a complete free–for–all with every one of us doing what is right in our own sight. Truth is not something that you and I conjure up in our minds; it is fixed by God and communicated through His Word. The problem with our culture today is that it is failing to submit to the absolute truth of Scripture. And, as we've seen by the results of the 2000 census, this has had a major impact on the family. Let me challenge us all to bring truth back to our families. Let us teach our children that there is such a thing as absolute truth, and that it is found in the Bible, and that adherence to it will be for their good and God's glory. As this is done, may God allow our families to shine as a city on a hill, and may this lost world be drawn to its light.
