Can You Accept the Bible and Evolution?, Part 4

Most people in America grow up attending public schools, watching TV and end up believing that evolution is a scientific fact. After all, why would they teach evolution in public schools if it wasn’t true? Why would so many scientists believe in evolution if it was false? Talk to the average person today, even the average professing Christian, and most do not believe in the literalness of the creation account in Genesis, the actual existence of Adam and Eve, nor do they believe in the World-Wide Flood. And the reason they do not believe these things is that they don’t believe the Bible is true! Instead they prefer to believe men rather than God, which is a form of idolatry.

Paul speaks about it in Rom. 1:25 where he says, “For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” Paul explains in vss. 24, 26, and 28 that when men exchange God’s truth for a lie, they are given over first to “lust and impurity,” second, “to lesbian and homosexual behavior,” and third, “to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of murder, strife, deceit, malice, etc.” This is exactly what we are seeing in our culture today and it is the fruit of exchanging the truth for a lie — idolatry. Once evolution is accepted, there is no creator God, there is no absolute truth, no divine law, no moral fall, no foundation for the atonement, and no Heaven or Hell. We are just animals who have evolved by random chance and we should seek as much pleasure as we can from this life since there is no life to come. We are the highest form of life and hence we are god.

So why are we doing this series? Well if you go back and read the three previous Calvary Reviews, you will discover we are discussing what is called “The Clergy Letter Project.” The Clergy Letter Project is an effort within liberal Christianity to let the world know that Christians believe evolution is true, harmonious, and compatible with the true claims of the Bible. We have shown that this is not the case. Evolution is not scientific, it is not truth, and it cannot be harmonized with the Bible. Evolution is a scientific impossibility (see the first article of this series).

So let’s address the last three propositions from the Clergy Letter Project which one would have to believe in order to sign the document. Since they are all similar and related I am going to state them first and then we will address them all together.

Fifth Proposition to Consider

In order to subscribe to the CLP you would have to agree that: “To reject this truth [evolution] or to treat it as “one theory among others” is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children. Implied in this statement is that the “theory of evolution” is not just a theory but scientific fact. To attack evolution is to attack scientific fact, embrace a lie and pass on those same lies to your children.

Sixth Proposition to Consider

In order to sign the CLP you would also have to agree that believing what the Bible literally teaches “precludes the full employment of the God-given faculty of reason,” “is to attempt to limit God,” and is “an act of hubris.” Hubris, in case you didn’t know that word, is to act with excessive pride and conceit. In other words, those who believe what the Bible literally teaches are excessively prideful and conceited and have chosen not to use their brains to consider the facts. This is a nice way of saying those who believe in Creation are idiots.

Seventh Proposition to Consider

You would have to assert that the only way “to preserve the integrity of the science curriculum” in our school classrooms is to believe and teach that “the theory of evolution” is “a core component of human knowledge.” What this means is you would have to believe evolution to correctly understand how heaven, earth, and all they contain came into being. You have to embrace the theory of evolution as a scientific fact because it is a foundational truth for everything we believe.

Keep in mind that over ten thousand clergy members have signed the CLP affirming evolution! Evolution is being promoted by those who claim to be ministers of Jesus Christ and who are called upon to preach the whole counsel of God’s Word! It reveals the sobering fact that over ten thousand pulpits in America are filled with false teachers who are either ignorant of the truth, ill-equipped to do ministry, or worse, who are purposefully deceiving people into practicing idolatry and undermining the Word of the living God.

We have already learned that to agree with evolution is:

1. To call Jesus and the authors of Scripture liars because they teach the Creation and Flood accounts are true.
2. It is to put what some scientists think is “true” at the present time on the same level of reliability and authority as what God says is true in His Word.
3. It is to refuse to accept that the theory of evolution is not “scientific.” The evolutionary origin of species is not scientific because it cannot be measured or repeated so it falls outside the realm of science.
4. Those who sign the CLP ignore the fact that there are no transitional forms in the fossil record, which means there is no evidence that one creature ever evolved into another creature over millions of years.
5. It ignores the fact that the geologic column, which is found and pictured in almost every geology text book with the oldest “pre-cambrian strata” at the bottom working on up to the more recent strata, is a total fabrication and does not exist anywhere on the planet! 6. Finally we discussed DNA which are the detailed blue prints of all living organisms. DNA is so complex that the super computers we have today still can’t unravel the information in a single strand! It is so complex in fact that it could never happen by chance as evolution claims that it did. In order for one species to evolve into another, new information would have to be added to the DNA of an existing, living creature, and added in an organized, intelligent way so that the creature would be able to do everything it did before and something else better. This also has never happened.

So who is really transmitting ignorance to their children? Time would fail us if we went on the offensive and began to ask evolutionists questions such as, “Where did matter come from?” You get different answers from different evolutionists. Why? Because they don’t know. Obviously there would have to be a tremendous amount of matter that came from somewhere, but they don’t know where. Something had to cause the matter to exist.

Physics teaches us that there is a cause and effect relationship for everything that exists. But when you go back far enough you get to the first cause of all things. Those who believe the Bible know that God is the cause of all things. Evolutionists don’t know. Well it is vitally important that you answer that question first before building an entire system on it. But evolutionists say, “We don’t know, but we believe…” This is not science but faith. A belief in what is unknown. They choose to believe that matter came from somewhere other than God though they have no idea where it came from. This is faith not science and the entire system of evolution is built upon it.

If you move past the question of where matter came from you might ask, “How did the universe come into being?” Fact is, they don’t know. They are guessing and believing, placing their faith in human ideas. This is man made religion not science.

But think about this for a moment. If you have studied the planets at all you probably know that gravity is 1/6 less on the moon than it is on earth. The reason for this is that the larger the mass, the greater the gravity. Larger planets like Jupiter have more gravity because they have more mass. Now consider the gravitational force that would be present if all the mass of the universe was brought together into one gigantic ball! It would be so great that it could not explode because the gravity would be so great it could not expand. If anything, it would collapse on itself and cause a black hole not a big bang universe.

Then there are many questions that must be answered by evolutionists such as who is the intelligent being that is assembling and improving all of these species as they evolve? Well, they reject that idea of an intelligent being and tell us that time + random chance + matter = life. Then once life is formed by chance it improves itself over time by chance. This is what is called “spontaneous generation,” which is the false idea that life can originate from non-living matter. It used to be thought that if you left a piece of meat sitting out all by itself it would spontaneously produce maggots which would hatch into flies. Scientists said this was true and even scoffed at and chided those scientists who rejected the idea of spontaneous generation. But after several hundred years this “scientific truth” was proved to be wrong in 1859 by Louis Pasteur, a French Scientist. And scientists today agree that spontaneous generation doesn’t happen, but they have to believe in spontaneous generation in order to believe in evolution. Go figure.

One might ask about the probability of a single complex protein forming by chance or mutating into another protein. Proteins are the basic building blocks of life so they must be formed first before life can be formed out of them. Its kind of like lumber which is needed to build a house. Yet scientific data proves that forming proteins or the mutation of proteins could never produce the life we see on this planet (see http://www.answersingenesis.org/tj/v17/i1/dependence.asp?) You first have to have the lumber before you can build the house, but not just lumber, lumber from living trees which has to be cut and milled into the right sizes first and then intelligently assembled. This never happens by chance just like complex proteins don’t happen by chance and then assemble themselves into a creature by non-thinking randomness.

Remember chance isn’t intelligent. Chance doesn’t think. Chance isn’t alive and it doesn’t do anything. The Bible teaches that chance doesn’t even exist! Prov. 16:33, for instance, says, “The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord.” The Bible teaches that all things are controlled by a sovereign God and everything is under His perfect all encompassing providence. So how could evolution and the Bible be compatible? They can’t be! But unintelligent chance and time are the god’s of evolution. The Bible’s God is an all powerful, ever present, all knowing, sovereign being who causes all things to exist. Again, diametrically opposed to the theory of evolution.

Of course things get worse when you talk about an entire cell forming by chance and exponentially worse when you talk about complex life forms with eyes and senses etc. happening by “chance” which doesn’t even exist. This is why in the last several years there has been an increasing interest in what is called the “Intelligent Design” movement (see http://www.intelligentdesignnetwork.org/; http://www.arn.org/). Scientists, philosophers, and academics, many who are not Christians or religious, have come to the conclusion that what we see in the universe argues irrefutably for an intelligent being. Why would they come to this conclusion? Many reasons, but the simplest reason is that living organisms are designed and engineered. It is impossible for them to form themselves, give life to themselves, and then improve upon themselves, an intelligent being has to do it.

One of the common examples given is flagellum bacteria often put forth as an example of “irreducible complexity.” Sorry about all the jargon but let me see if I can explain the concept of irreducible complexity. According to evolution, given enough time and non-intelligent purposelessness, things evolve from simple to complex. Let’s use the very simple example of a non-living light socket. The very basic light fixture you might see used in a closet or garage. The light socket is composed of five parts. There are two screws to attach the wires to the contact plates, two contact plates, and a cast plastic socket. If you remove any one of these pieces, the light socket will not work. It has irreducible complexity which means every part is needed to make the light fixture work.

So the question is put forth by the intelligent design community, “how did all the separately engineered parts of the light socket evolve over time when each piece is worthless on its own?” Each piece would have to evolve one by one, having no function, until all pieces evolved and assembled themselves in just the right way to make the light socket work. Light sockets are intelligently designed, the individual parts intelligently designed to work together. An intelligent being has to assemble, and install the fixture to make it work. Keep in mind that any one-celled animal is many, many times more complex than any light socket. But for sake of argument, what is the chance of a five piece light socket coming into being by chance? Even if you put all the intelligently engineered and created pieces into close proximity to one another, what are the chances of those parts assembling themselves and hooking themselves up to the electrical wires? Zero. Why? It takes an intelligent being to create the parts, assemble them and install the fixture.

Now let’s look at this light socket from an evolutionary perspective. Not only does evolution say that the light socket evolved by chance, without an intelligent designer, but that given more time it became a light socket with a pull chain. Given more time it became a light socket with a three way switch and eventually it evolved without intelligence into a toaster, then a TV, then a microwave oven! All during these changes there was no intelligent being engineering any of the parts or assembling anything.

Life forms are far more complex than any mechanical device ever constructed by man. I like what Puritan Thomas Watson said even before Darwin came along, “All the world cannot make a fly.” All the scientists in the world, with all of their grants and machines, and laboratories have been unable to create even the simplest life form though they have tried relentlessly. But let’s just say that they were finally able to do it. What would that prove? Intelligent design!
