Books for Women

July, 2009

by: Carol Cogswell

Summer is in full swing, and what a great time it is to read a good book! Below is a sampling of books recommended by your Women’s Ministries Committee.

Carol Cogswell

Abide in Christ by Andrew Murray: This book invites you to take in words from Scripture, read a daily meditation, pray, and surrender yourself anew to Christ. This thirty-one-day devotional is as timely now as it was in 1895 when it was first published. Newly updated and edited for today's reader, Abide in Christ brings a fresh understanding of what a privilege and high calling it is to abide in Christ.

Shelbi Cullen

In Trouble and in Joy by Sharon James: The author introduces you to four remarkable women: Margaret Baxter (a rebellious and glamorous teenager who ends up marrying a Puritan minister twice her age), Anne Steele (a famous hymn writer during the 18th century), Frances Ridley Havergal (best known for her hymn, “Take my life and let it be”), and Sarah Edwards (wife of Jonathan Edwards). The author draws beautiful spiritual portraits of these four women who were true Christians in the real world.

Carolyn Dixon

The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan: Feel like the only person with struggles in the Christian life? Wonder if anyone else has traveled the same road? Millions of Christians have cherished this book, called “the greatest allegory ever written.” It is just as relevant today as when the author wrote it from his prison cell. There are various editions available: the original old English, an updated version with modern English, and the story retold for children.

Ruth Hammer

The God Who Hears by W. Bingham Hunter: The true aim of prayer is intimacy with God. We pray effectively when we make him the desire of our hearts. Hunter answers our questions about prayer by directing us to the nature and attributes of God … God responds not to our prayers but to who we are—what we think, feel, will and do. Prayer is communication from whole persons to the Wholeness that is the living God.

Kristen Stone

Feminine Appeal by Carolyn Mahaney: The author identifies with the challenges facing women in today’s world and meets them with the guidance of God’s Word. The feminine virtues described in Titus 2 have transformed her life and the lives of countless other women. This book will show you the appeal of being a woman who lives for God and helps others do the same.
