A Remedy for Huddle–Befuddlement

May, 2003

Which Way Do the Players Go?

Over the past months, we in the Men's Ministry have become increasingly aware that there are some tremendous spiritual needs within the men of our church. Somehow, it seemed that the Lord was presenting us with a wonderful opportunity to help our men to grow. Yet we realized that we weren't sure how to take advantage of it. Over the years, we have had some highly successful outreaches to our men, in the form of our breakfasts, prayer times, and our Annual Men's Retreat. In some way, though, they were like the huddle in a football game; a great “quarterback” would offer us a game plan. But, after the break, every man went his own way — alone. So, when we met last December, Pastor Justin Erickson joined to help us in seeking needed direction. First, we examined strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the ministry. Then, we spent time examining Biblical principles of ministry. We recognized that one of the chief areas in which we needed to help our men grow was in the area of leadership: in the home, in the church, in life. We also recognized that, to build leaders, we needed to help our men develop the character qualities of leadership, by helping them develop a proper view of God; by building integrity and purity; by learning and practicing humility; and by developing as servants and stewards.

With more–clearly established, Biblical goals, it was fairly easy to see a workable “program.” We decided to revive the periodic Men's Breakfasts and have them on a monthly basis. The speakers we invite will address some areas of godly leadership qualities in men. In order to follow up on these teaching sessions (and on our annual retreat), we will establish men's small groups. These groups will meet once per month to discuss issues and questions raised by the monthly speaker. Such groups would provide a venue in which men can develop spiritual friendships in an informal fellowship and discipleship setting.

We are in the midst of forming these small groups. Pray for these efforts. Come and join us in a great ministry to the Lord and our men. Pray much. “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” (Psalm 127.1)
