The alarm sounds and you dutifully get out of bed. Stumbling to your bathroom like a bear recovering from hibernation, you start your shower. The warm water and steam begins to revive your mind, and you finally feel like a fully functioning human. After toweling off, you open the closet door and begin to make your first real decision of the day.
What should I wear today? Should I risk wearing the same outfit that I wore ten days ago? Is it too hot to wear that long sleeved shirt? Will this flatter my figure? Does this feature my stomach? Is this shirt still in fashion? How about this one — What will most glorify God and bring truth to a dying world? 1 Corinthians 10:31 states the all–familiar verse, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” There is nothing more mundane, more habitual, more normal than eating and drinking. Yet, even these everyday tasks are to be done to the glory of God. So in like manner, we are to dress to the glory of God. Our first glance in the mirror should not be self-centered, but God-centered, and what we reach for should be that item which will bring God the most glory that day.
John MacArthur once said, “You are the only Bible that some people ever read.” I agree. What you wear says a lot about you. Think about it, more than likely you rub shoulders with hundreds of people every day. Whether passing them on the hall, strolling through a park, or shopping at the mall. On a good day, you might strike up ten to twenty conversations. And on a great day, you might have an in depth Gospel conversation with one of them. But for the majority of the people you encounter you will only have 3–4 seconds to make an impact. And more than likely, the clothes that you wear proclaim the message you share.
So, what are you preaching during those moments? I hope your message is not: Lust over my Figure. I hope your sermon is not: Shop at Abercrombie and Fitch. I hope you don’t seize that momentary opportunity to say: Pursue the things of this world. What are you preaching during each of those available moments?
Some of the teenagers at Calvary have taken up the challenge to wear an Abort73.com shirt everyday to school. In doing so, they are telling the world that God values the life of the unborn. They decry a societal sin which is grievous to God. And they direct the onlookers to a website which shares the truth about abortion and the truth about God. These brave students have decided to do something radically God–glorifying with their clothing. When they open their closet, they make the decision to confront a pagan culture. They are likely to be laughed at and shunned for preaching this message on a godless campus, but they will receive their reward when it counts (Matthew 5:10-12).
Pray for them. Join them. Whenever you have the freedom to wear a shirt for the Lord slip on an Abort73.com shirt and preach every moment you can. It may not be your “style,” it may not fit your wardrobe, it may knock you down a notch or two with certain people. But it will be worth it.
Buy a shirt and buy up a thousand moments that will make a difference (for more information, visit Abort73.com/shirtaday or email michael@abort73.com).
