Pastor Ed Wilde will be teaching three lessons on John Owen’s works, “Indwelling Sin”, “Temptation” and the “Mortification of Sin”. He will be using the book “Overcoming Sin & Temptation” edited by Kapic & Taylor, which is a useful edition of these three works by John Owen. [Available in our bookstore. -- John Owen, “The Prince of Puritan Divines”.]
Jerry Bridges wrote of Owen, “To read Owen is to mine spiritual gold”. C.J. Mahaney wrote, “No writer has taught me more about the dynamics of the heart and the deceitfulness of sin than John Owen.” While Owen is extraordinarily good on the nature of sin and how to overcome sin, he can be difficult to follow. We are going to go over these three works, one on each night, to explain Owen’s works. Outside of the Bible, there are no better books on the nature of sin and dealing with temptation.
Incidentally, these works were originally sermons John Owen taught to high school boys to help them deal with sin. Interesting how youth ministries have changed over the past 400 years.
