The account of the Penitent Thief in Luke 23:39-43 is one of the most reassuring and comforting scenes in the whole Bible. The repentant and sorrowful response of a guilty robber gives tremendous hope to any sinner who recognizes their sin for what it is, and sees Jesus for who He is, the sinless Savior of every man who comes to Him for unconditional mercy. To the believer, this story is the greatest example of God's overwhelming grace towards anyone who puts their faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. The story of the Penitent Thief ultimately reminds us of what it is in us that merits salvation: nothing. As the hymn writer said, "nothing in my hands I bring, simply to the cross I cling."
