The Faithfulness of God

This song is a favorite of mine. I still remember a beautiful gift, a small picture frame with the words “Great is Thy Faithfulness” written in calligraphy. It is a continual reminder of God’s goodness to my family and me over the years. Truly, the Faithfulness of God is a great source of comfort to every Christian, even when difficult times come. We can all look back on our personal Christian journey and identify countless examples of how God has kept His Word and been true to His promises, despite our lack of faith and unfaithfulness to Him.

From the personal side, we know God is faithful, but also, how amazing to ponder the faithfulness of God from a corporate standpoint, as His church. In Titus 1:2, Paul says that he is an apostle “in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, but at the proper time manifested even His Word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior.” The Gospel which Paul preaches is one of “hope.” And this hope was promised from before time (“long ages ago” better, “before the times of the ages”), but realized in human history (“at the proper time”). Before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:5), God the Father set forth a loving plan to call a people out of darkness for Himself. But now, in time, God has fulfilled His promises.

All of this is possible because “God, who cannot lie” is a faithful God! Now, in human history, he has fulfilled His precious promises through the “mediatorial” work of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. Nothing that we can do, or will do, can ever undo that which He has set Himself out to do. All of this is motivated by His wonderful love for us, so that even when our love often grows cold, He remains faithful to His eternal promises in Christ Jesus. How comforting and exhilarating that one day our hope will be fully realized because God is faithful, even when we, at times, are faithless. “Great is Thy Faithfulness, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not…Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”
