Role: Member of the Body of Christ
Speaker: Jeff Learned Series: Men's Breakfast: Godly Excellence in a Man's Roles
Jeff Learned taught us about men’s role as “Member of the Body of Christ,” part of our 2024 series, “Godly Excellence in a Man’s Roles.”
There are three necessities in our role as Members of the Body of Christ or, said another way, as Disciples in the Church.
First, we need to be men of the Word, following the encouragement of 2 Timothy 2:15 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Knowledge and application of the Word fosters our own growth in Christ, and equips us to serve and to encourage fellow believers with thoughts that are supported by God’s word and not just our opinions.
- Know what the Word says about the basics of the faith.
- Seek to be able to articulate and explain what God teaches on many other theological questions, and what the bible teaches about day to day living.
- Participate in a small group bible study.
- Read books written by the great authors of the Christian faith such as John MacArthur, R.C. Sproul, James Montgomery Boice, A.W. Tozer, and JC Ryle.
- God can help us to be men of the word, regardless of our level of intelligence or ability. The only thing that can keep us from excelling is a lack of diligence or outright laziness.
Second, we need to be men that love the church.
- Imitate Christ who loved the church through actions, such as dying for her and serving her. Biblical love is not a feeling or even words, it is action.
- Seek to model the Godly behaviors set forth in 1 Corinthians 13 with our brothers and sisters in Christ, such as being patient and kind and not being rude, arrogant, or insisting on our own way.
- Protect the unity of the church, by loving and encouraging our fellow believers in their difficulties and helping to meet their needs, while avoiding being overly critical or negative of those in the Body.
Finally, we need to be men that serve Christ in the Church. God has placed each of us in CBC because He sees us as necessary, so we need to seek to find where He would have us serve.
- Seek to discover needs of and in the church, and meet those needs.
- Get into people’s lives to understand what their needs are so that you can help support them.
Spend time with youth or younger men so they can see a mature believer and learn from you.
