Role: Man of God
Speaker: Bruce Wendler Series: Men's Breakfast: Godly Excellence in a Man's Roles
Bruce Wendler taught us about a man’s role as “Man of God,” as Christ ordained us to fulfill.
2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped with every good work” and thus provides us an excellent model for fulfilling our role as “men of God.”
First, we need to know the “teaching,” meaning understanding the nature of God, the nature of Christ, and all the elemental teachings of sin, redemption, justification, forgiveness, reconciliation and atonement, as well as what holy living does and doesn’t entail.
Once we know the teachings, we need to accept and seek reproof (Proverbs 3:12), recognizing, often with great pain and regret, where our behavior, actions and thoughts are not consistent with scripture. Reproof comes by action of the Holy Spirit, through reading and meditating on the word of God, as well as from fellow believers when we make our lives transparent to them. We need to embrace reproof rather than rejecting it or getting angry or defensive, as encouraged by Proverbs 6:23.
Once we embrace reproof, then we need to seek correction, breaking the chain of events that get us into sin. We need to mortify the deeds of the body (Romans 8:13). Further, we need to avoid repeating sin by:
- Denying ourselves and considering ourselves dead to this world (Luke 9:23)
- Seeking the way of escape when tempted by sin (1 Cor 10:13)
- Be honest with ourselves about our sin and vulnerabilities (Matthew 7:5).
Finally, we need to seek maturity (Eph 4:13) having our senses trained to discern good and evil (Hebrews 5:14), and become a bondservant of Christ by:
- Seeking to please God, rather than man (Galatians 1:10)
- Craving the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:6)
- Exhibiting a healthy balance of grace and knowledge (2 Peter 3:18).
