Session 2: Being a Husband Who Leads Like Christ
Speaker: Patrick Carmichael Series: 2024 Men's Conference
The biblical principles of being a good husband can apply to every man, married or not, because there are parallels between a good husband and a good friend/leader in general. So all men should know and apply these scriptural commands.
Husbands are, of course, to provide for and protect their wives, which is an expression of love. As set forth in Ephesians 5:25-33, we must also cherish our wives (Eph 5:29) in a way that they can understand and experience.
When we cherish our wives, we see them as more important to us than anything in our lives (other than Jesus), by:
- Delighting in her. We prefer to be with her more than anyone else. We are interested in what interests her. We turn our attention to her and engage with her intentionally. (Song of Solomon 4:10; 6:8-9).
- Esteeming her with the highest honor. We treat her with honor, almost like royalty. We ensure that she feels like our relationship is an oasis from the world, a safe zone to which she can retreat.
- Fixating on her goodness and positive qualities. We see the goodness in our wife, and encourage her by praising her. As Prov 19:11 says, we are wise and overlook faults. We are content with her, and don’t compare her to others. We regularly thank the Lord for her and her goodness.
- Taking initiative to serve her. We seek to serve her and meet her needs, rather than seeking for her to serve us. We also don’t lord our authority over our wife, so that when we have a disagreement with our wife about a decision, we seek to lovingly woo her to our position while seeking to understand her position, and in humility accept her position if it proves better.
We can measure whether we have made it clear that we cherish her, by regularly asking our wife three important questions: 1) what do I do that cherishes you, 2) what do I do that does not make you feel cherished, and 3) if you knew I wouldn’t respond in anger or pride, what kind of feedback would you give me to cherish and love you better than I do?
