Dealing with our Anger in a Wise Manner

Speaker: Patrick Carmichael Series: Men's Breakfast Series: Living in God's Wisdom

Patrick Carmichael, Lead Teaching Pastor of Christ Bible Church, taught us how we can address our anger in a wise manner.

First, we must realize that anger per se is not sin.  It is normal to be angry at evil acts, such as the murder of Charlie Kirk.  But we are told in scripture to be angry, but not to sin (Eph 4:26).

We should study scripture in order to evaluate whether the anger we might feel at evil acts is righteous or not, because it is sometimes difficult to discern what is “righteous” anger and what is “sinful” anger.

Sinful anger comes from an improper desire to “store up treasures on earth” rather than storing up treasures in heaven, as set forth in Matthew 6:19-21.

There are three main reasons why we get angry, each of which stems from pride and a mentality of entitlement.

  • When something we treasure is threatened or taken away. These treasures include control over our circumstances and plans (e.g. Jonah 4:1-2), our possessions (e.g. 1 Kings 21:4), sexual intimacy (2 Sam 13:1-15), and our reputation (e.g. Num 22).
  • When you have expectations that are not met.
  • When we have prideful and think we are in control, rather than God

We need to use accountability partners and our family to help us to identify when we are becoming angry.  When that anger emerges, there are three ways to change and address our anger, most importantly, through the gospel.

  • Worshipping God and humbly resting in Him, knowing He is in charge.
  • Fighting our feelings of anger with truth, such as fighting anger over a loss of control with the truth that God is in control, not us. Or fighting anger over a loss of reputation or respect with the reality that we are nothing without Christ.
  • Treasuring Jesus before all our other treasures.
