Doctrine for Daily Living - Systematic Theology

Speaker: Jay Underwood Series: Doctrine for Daily Living

Pastor Jay began our 2026 teaching series, “Doctrine for Daily Living,” by teaching us about systematic theology.  An understanding of what “systematic theology” entails is a necessary underpinning of the study of doctrine in teaching throughout the year.

First, Pastor Jay defined terms.  A “doctrine” is a biblical teaching or instruction.  “Biblical Theology” traces the various themes of the bible, including its key and overarching theme of God’s redemptive plan for humanity, by considering how those themes are revealed throughout the whole of scripture.   “Systematic Theology” is the process of fitting the various biblical doctrines into a coherent structure.

Our theology and doctrinal understanding matters, because all that we say and do will be informed by these. The more you know and believe about theology and doctrine, the more your life will reflect that. Think about it this way: theology and doctrine informs your mind, your mind shapes your affections, your affections shape your will and your will translates to action.

The “system” of systematic theology covers several areas.

  • “Bibliology” - The study of the Bible which provides an authoritative, objective source of information to understand God, including who He is, what He has done and what He will do.
  • “Theology Proper” - The study of God the father and His existence, names, attributes, decrees, and glory. Also includes the Trinity.
  • “Christology” - The study of God the Son, from before his incarnation, to his incarnate state, and His glorification.
  • “Pneumatology” - The study of God the Holy Spirit as reflected throughout the Old and New Testaments, as well as His personhood, names, titles, and ministries.
  • “Anthropology and Hamartiology” - The study of man and sin including the fall of man in the garden and the pervasiveness of sin.
  • “Soteriology” - The study of God’s plan, accomplishment and application of redemption.
  • “Angelology”- The study of angels, demons, and Satan, including their definition, nature, numbers, residence, power, and appearance.
  • “Ecclesiology”- The study of the church, including its definition, purpose, government, spiritual authority, structure, and ordinances.
  • “Eschatology” -The study of what will transpire through the end times, including the “new heavens and the new earth” and the role of the individual believer and the church.
